Panel paintings are artworks created on a rigid surface, traditionally wood, but also metal or canvas stretched on a frame.  These paintings predate the widespread use of stretched canvas and were often created with tempera or oil paints.  Panel paintings allowed for detailed and intricate works,  often commissioned for religious purposes,  portraying scenes from the Bible or  mythology.  They could also be used for smaller, more personal portraits.
